Barbie Exclusive Convention Dolls

Neben den regulären Barbies bringt Mattel auch regelmäßig Exclusive Dolls heraus, die im Rahmen von größeren Barbie- bzw. Fashiondoll Conventions an die Teilnehmer abgegeben bzw. verkauft werden. Sie kommen nicht in den normalen Handel, sondern können nur im Rahmen der Veranstaltung oder später über Wiederverkäufer gekauft werden.

Manchmal gibt es im Handel eine ähnliche Puppe, aber mit anderer Haarfarbe bzw. etwas verändertem Design. Ansonsten sind die Convention Dolls sehr exklusiv und regulär nicht zu kaufen. Die National Barbie Doll Collector Convention (NBDCC) in den USA hat meist 800 Teilnehmer, dafür stellt Mattel jedes Jahr extra 800 Convention Dolls her. Bei den Europäischen Conventions, in Paris oder Madrid, ist die Stückzahl kleiner, da sponsert Mattel ca. 300 Stück.

Die älteren Convention Dolls wurden oftmals auch von den Veranstaltern bzw. den Barbie Clubs selbst gestaltet. Auf der Barbie Börse in Koblenz hat z.B. Martha Bodenbach eine reguläre Mattel Puppe umgestaltet, Kleidung nähen lassen und einen Karton für sie entworfen. Die gab es in Stückzahlen von ca. 50 Stück.

Auf der Hamburg Convention war es früher ebenso. Ich habe eine reguläre Mattel Puppe genommen und sie neu ausgestattet. Für meine 1. Convention hatte ich für eine Replika Ponytail Barbie ein rot-schwarzes Seiden-Sommerkleidchen entworfen und alle per Hand selber angefertigt. Die Puppen mussten vorbestellt werden. Es ist eine schöne Erinnerung an die jeweils besuchte Veranstaltung.

In addition to the regular Barbies, Mattel releases regulary exclusive dolls, which are given away or sold to participants of larger Barbie or fashion doll conventions. They will not be available in regular stores and can only be purchased as part of the event or later through resellers.

Sometimes there is a similar doll on the market, but with a different hair color or slightly different design. The convention dolls are very exclusive and cannot be bought regularly. The National Barbie Doll Collector Convention (NBDCC) in the USA hast usually around 800 participants, and Mattel produces for them every year extra dolls. At the European conventions in Paris, Rome, Madrid or Lisboa, the number of pieces is smaller, Mattels sponsors the conventions with around 300 dolls.

The older convention dolls were often designed by the organizers or the Barbie Clubs themselves. At the Barbie Convention in Koblenz, for example, Martha Bodenbach redesigned a regular Mattel doll, had clothes sewn and designed a box for her. They were available in quantities of around 50 pieces. Helga Frings the formal organizer of the Cologne Convention did the same.

And in my first years as organizer of the Hamburg Convention I used to do the same. I took a regular Mattel doll and re-equipped her. For my first convention I designed a red and black silk summer dress for a replica Ponytail Barbie and made them all by hand. The dolls had to be pre-ordered. It is a nice reminder of the event you attended.

US National Barbie Doll Collector Convention

In den 1980er Jahren begann der Hype um die Barbie Collector Dolls für erwachsene Sammler und 1980 fand auch schon in New York City vom 15. bis 18. Oktober die erste Barbie Convention, bzw. das erste Treffen von Barbie Doll Collectors statt. Mattel unterstützte die Veranstaltung mit 150 Beauty Secret Barbies, die ein „21 Years of Barbie“ Banner tragen. Die nächste Convention wurde 1982 in Michigan durchgeführt, danach wurde die Veranstaltung im jährlichen Turnus in wechselnden US-Städten ausgetragen und immer unter ein anderes Motto gestellt.

Der Eintritt ist nur für eine limitierte Gästezahl möglich, die sich vorab für die Convention registrieren müssen, 2024 waren es 850 Teilnehmer, der Eintrittspreis betrug 520 Dollar. Im Eintrittsgeld enthalten ist der Zugang zu der mehrtägigen Veranstaltung und den verschiedenen Events. Außerdem gibt es als Gastgeschenk eine Convention Barbie, die Mattel exklusiv für die Veranstaltung produziert. In den ersten Jahren wurde nur eine Convention Barbie ausgegeben, später gab es dann mehrere Dolls, häufig als Caucasian / Afro-american Version. Gelegentlich gab es auch Giftsets mit 2 Dolls.

The hype surrounding Barbie Collector Dolls for adult collectors began in the 1990s and the first National Barbie Collector Convention opened in 1993. Since then, the NBDCC has been celebrated as an annual event, held in different US cities. The Entry is only possible for a limited number of guests who must register for the convention in advance.

In 2024 the Convention is opened for 850 participants. The admission price is $520, it includes the access to the Convention and the different Events and among others the 2024 Convention Barbie. In the first years Mattel issued only one Convention Barbie. Later it was expanded to Caucasian / Afro-American versions and finally there were often gift sets with 2 dolls.

1983 – Phoenix, Arizona -Barbie’s Pow-Wow:
Mattel donated 250 (?) Fashion Jeans Barbie dolls, wearing prairie dresses, created by Mattel Designer Janet Goldblatt. Ellen Riddell created with a Hispanic Barbie an Indian maiden in two fabric variations. As table centerpiece was the Sport ‚N Shave Ken dressed as an Indian chief (LE25).

1984 – New York City – Barbie loves New York:
Mattel donated 250 redressed Loving You Barbies.

1985 – Romulus, Michigan – Barbie Around the World Festival:

Two Convention dolls: A Japanese Barbie, created by Janet Goldblatt and a Takara Japanese Style Barbie from Japan. The Set was limited to 250 dolls.


1986 – Phoenix Arizona – Barbie’s Reunion:
The Souvenir Barbie is a redressed Sun Gold Malibu Barbie, wearing a suit and hat. Mattel further donated 275 Dream Glow Kens.

1987 – Oklahoma City –„In Oklahoma Where Every Day Is Christmas with Barbie“

Mattel donated 300 Astronaut Barbies in original boxes, but the dolls became redressed in a striped nightshirt with cap. The Barbie wears a Banner with the Slogan: „We girls can do anything, right Barbie!

1988 – Seattle, Washington – Barbie Rain or Shine
Mattel donated 300 Souvenir dolls, dressed as a rhododendron. The starting dolls for this gift were the Sun Gold Barbie and the Canadian Fashion Play Barbie.

1989 – Garden Grove, California – Barbie Forever Young
The souvenir doll was a „Barbie and the Sensations“ Barbie, redressed as a Disney Mousketeer, LE 500.  The fashion is handmade and features a light blue skirt, white short sleeved top with Mickey Mouse, bobby socks and saddle shoes and a Mouseketeer hat. Additionally Mattel donated a Passeio Viky doll from Brazil.

The Joie de Vivre Barbies (Platinum Label, LE 800) were designed by doll artist Marirose. They were produced with the vintage Barbie Face in a CC and AA version. The outfit is inspired by the 1957 musical comedy “Funny Face.”

Barbie / Fashion Doll Conventions in Europe

In Deutschland griffen Barbiesammler die Idee der NBDCC auf und es wurden in verschiedenen Großstädten Barbie Conventions organisiert. Die 1. Norddeutsche Barbie Convention, damals unter der Leitung von Inge Hummel fand schon 1994 statt. Das Konzept der frühen Conventions war stark an die Idee der NBDCC angelehnt, ein Event rund um Barbie, bei dem sich Sammler treffen und Barbie feiern. Es gab verschiedene Programmpunkte, oftmals eine Fashion Show oder ein Motto zu dem man sich passend kleiden konnte. Und die Veranstalter produzierten in Eigenregie Convention Dolls. In den Niederlanden scheint es sich ähnlich entwickelt zu haben. Später entwickelten sich die Veranstaltungen mehr zu reinen Verkaufsbörsen ohne begleitende Programmpunkte.

Hier einige Beispiele der frühen Convention Dolls.

Seit 2011 (?) findet in Mailand jedes Jahr die Italiensische Doll Convention (IDC)statt. 2012 (?) wurde in Rom und Paris eine große jährliche Barbie Convention initiert, die sich stark an das Konzept der NBDCC anlehnen. 2013 startete die erste Madrid Fashion Doll Show und einige Jahre später folgten Portugal mit der Portuguese Fashion Doll Convention. In Asien gibt es in Japan seit einigen Jahren die Japan Fashion Doll Convention.
