The Teen Talk could talk with help of a little chip and she did it much better than the former talking Barbies. One of her sentences excited the American Association of University Women mightily on. She said: „math class is tough“. This would underpin the prejudice that women are not smart enough for math.

How to read in the New York Times in october 1992 Mattel decided to delete this phrase. the Teen Talk Barbie was not recalled, but who wanted, got a new talk chip without math. About the further production the Times wrote: „…the computer chip that randomly selects four phrases for each doll will now pick from 269 selections, not 270.“

The former Mattel „President“ Jill E. Barad sent an apology letter to the American Association of University Women, that Mattel did a mistake. The Times printed the following sentence „We didn’t fully consider the potentially negative implications of this phrase…“

The Teen Talk Barbie was sold in the following different countries with the respective label and language:

France – Je Te Parle (I Talk With You)
Latin America / Spain – Duices Palabras (Sweet Words)
Brazil / Portugal – Doces Palavras (Sweet Words)
Germany – Ich spreche mit dir (I Talk With You)
Holland – Ik praat met je (I Talk With You)
Greece – Μαγική φωνή (Magic Voice)

Diese gab tatsächlich „Teeny Talk“ von sich und sprach auf Knopfdruck ein paar Sätze. In den USA regte ihr Gebrabbelt, bzw. einer der Sätze, die American Association of University Women mächtig auf. Sie sagte nämlich: „math class is tough“ also „Mathematik ist hart / schwierig“. Der Vorwurf der Association lautete (flapsig formuliert), dass Barbie damit das Vorurteil untermauere, Frauen seien zu doof für Mathe.

Wie die New York Times im Oktober 1992 berichtete, wurde von Mattel schließlich beschlossen, dass Barbie diesen schlimmen Satz künftig nicht mehr sagen würde. Sie wurde zwar nicht aus den Läden zurück gezogen, aber wer drauf bestand, bekam einen neuen Sprach-Chip für seine Barbie ohne den Mathekram. Über die weitere Produktion der Teen Talk schrieb die Times: „…the computer chip that randomly selects four phrases for each doll will now pick from 269 selections, not 270.“

Die damalige Mattel „Presidentin“ Jill E. Barad entschuldigte sich außerdem in einem Brief bei der American Association of University Women, dass man einen Fehler gemacht hätte. Daraus druckte die Times u.a. den folgenden Satz ab: „We didn’t fully consider the potentially negative implications of this phrase…“

Die Teen Talk wurde mit verschiedenen Haarfarben (blonde, brunette, red), Augenfarben (blau/braun/grün), Augenbemalung / Makeup und mit verschieden farbigen Hüten (blau, schwarz, pink, türkis), so dass es insgesamt eine große Anzahl Teen Talk Barbies gibt, die sich in kleinen Details unterscheiden.

Die Teen Talk Barbie wurde in den folgenden verschiedenen Ländern mit der jeweiligen Aufschrift und der entsprechenden Sprache verkauft:
