Ken as Barbies Companion was introduced in 1961. He arrived like Barbie half naked, dressed in a swimsuit. He wore a red pant with a white stripe on the right and left side and Cork Sandales plus a towel. He was produced with blond and brunette flocked hairs. His body ist marked: Ken T.M. / Pats. Pend. / ©MCMLX / by / Mattel / Inc. The legs were straight, not bendable. This first Ken and his outfit had the packnumber #750. Luckily Ken got soon a bigger wardrobe with outfits for every occasions. Mattel sold 8 outfits separately. So he could choose between 9 different outfits in his first year of life.
Ken wurde 1961 als Barbies Freund vorgestellt. Er hatte blonde oder brunette geflockte Haare. Da die Haare zu fusseln neigten, hatte er schnell den Namen Fuzzy Ken weg. Genau wie Barbie war sehr sparsam in einem Badeoutfit gekleidet. Der erste Ken trug eine rote Badehose mit einem weißen Streifen rechts und links sowie Badeschlappen aus Kork. Ergänzend hatte er ein Handtuch dabei. Seine nicht knickbaren Beine (straight legs) haben eine leicht gespreizte Haltung und die Finger sind in den Spitzen etwas gekrümmt. Die Körpermarkierung lautet: Ken T.M. / Pats. Pend. / ©MCMLX / by / Mattel / Inc. Ken und sein Outfit hatten die Packnummer #750. Idee des Modepuppen-Konzepts war es natürlich, dass ergänzende Kleidung zu den Puppen gekauft wurde. So brachte Mattel acht ergänzende Kleidungssets heraus. Insgesamt konnte Ken in seinem ersten Lebensjahr somit zwischen 9 Outfits für unterschiedlichste sportliche oder gesellschaftliche Anlässe wählen.

Fresh in life, Ken got 1962 a completly makeover with a new body (Ken T.M. / Pats. Pend. / ©MCMLX / by / Mattel / Inc. ) and new headmold. Now he has sculpted / painted hairs. But he had nearly the same outfit and still the same pack number 750. His red pants are now without stripes, new is a a red and white striped beach jacket. In 1962 Ken got 3 new outfits and all outfits from 1961 were repeated. In addition to the fashionsets came 10 (?) Pak items into the shops. So Ken had more shirts and jackets, pants and other things to mix and match.
Frisch geboren wurde Ken gleich 1962 noch einmal einer Totalerneuerung unterzogen. Das augenscheinlichste ist das neue Facemold. Es hat jetzt eine modellierte Crew Cut Frisur, wie es zu der Zeit modern war, und gemalte Haare. Auch der zweite Ken war wieder spärlich mit einer roten Badehose (jetzt streifenlos) bekleidet, erganzend dazu hat er eine rot-weiß gestreifte Strandjacke bekommen. Er hat die identische Packnummer 750. Insgesamt bekam Ken in seinem zweiten Lebensjahr 3 neue Outfits. Dazu wurden alle Outfits von 1961wiederholt. Desweiteren kamen 10 (?) Pak-Artikel heraus. Also hatte Kens Garderobe jetzt schon beachtliche Ausmaße. Er konnte zwischen mehreren Hemden, Jacken, Hosen etc. wählen und sie nach Belieben kombinieren.

In Kens third year Mattel presented another new version with a modified head and body. The third Ken is about 6 mm shorter than its two predecessors – so he is called Shorty. The new patented body is marked: Ken ® / © 1960 / by / Matte, Inc. / Hawthorn / Calif. UNITED STATES. Not much has changed on the facemold, it’s a bit smaller and the crew cut seems rounded and there are small differences on the face painting. The hairs were again painted in blonde and brunette. The sparse swimwear clothing with red swimwear and beach jacket as well as the product number # 750 have remained the same. For Ken’s wardrobe, Mattel released 9 new outfits plus 6 Pak items. In addition, various outfits from the two previous years were repeated.
In Kens drittem Lebensjahr stellte Mattel wieder eine neue Version mit modifiziertem Kopf und Körper vor. Der dritte Ken ist etwa 6 mm kleiner als seine beiden Vorgänger, was ihm den Namen Shorty einbrachte. Am Facemold hat sich nicht viel geändert, der modellierte und bemalte Crew Cut, in blond oder brunette, ist etwas kleiner und wirkt runder ausgeformt. Auch bei Gesichtsbemalung gibt es Unterschiede. Gleich geblieben ist die spärliche Badehosen Bekleidung mit roter Badehose und Strandjacke sowie die Produktnummer #750. Für Kens Kleiderschrank brachte Mattel 9 neue Outfits plus 6 Pak Artikel heraus. Außerdem wurden verschiedene Outfits aus den beiden vorherigen Jahren wiederholt.

Ken was back in the normal size of 12 inches, with the head from 1962. He has a newly patented body, for which some features of the 1963 Ken were taken over, others are new. So Ken’s body was patented a fourth time. The 1964 body with straight legs is marked: © 1960 7 by / Mattel, Inc. / Hawthorn / Calif. U.S.A. As in the previous years, Ken was available in blonde or brunette and he wore the red swimming trunks + beach jacket again. As a new character Allan appeared in 1964. Allan got his own facemold, but has the same body with straight legs and the same body markings like Ken. He also wears a beach outfit, basically the same as Ken, only the pattern and colors are different. Allan was released with product number # 1000. Because Ken and Allan have the same body, they can share their clothes with each other. In 1964 they got 20 new outfits (including different partner costumes for Barbie & Ken), 12 new Pak items and there were some repetitions from previous years.
Ab 1964 gab es Ken wieder in der Normalgröße von 12 Zoll, mit dem ersten Kopf von 1962. Er hat aber nochmals einen neu patentierten Körper, für den einige Merkmale des 1963er Kens übernommen wurden, andere sind neu. Also wurde Kens Körper ein viertes mal patentiert. Wie in den Vorjahren gab es Ken in blond oder brunette und er trug wieder die rote Badehose + Strandjacke. Als neuer Charakter trat 1964 Allan in Erscheinung. Allan bekam ein eigenes Facemold, hat aber den gleichen Körper mit straight legs und der identischen Körper Markierung. Auch er trägt ein Strandoutfit, im Grunde das Gleiche wie Ken, nur die Musterung und Farben sind anders. Allan wurde mit der Produktnummer #1000 herausgebracht. Da Ken und Allan die gleichen Körpermaße haben, können sie ihre Kleidung miteinander teilen. Da es Mattel gut mit den beiden meinte, bekamen sie 20 neue Outfits (u.a. verschiedene Partner Kostüme für Barbie & Ken), 12 neue Pak Artikel und es gab einige Wiederholungen aus den Vorjahren.

This year Ken and Allan (as well as Barbie and her friends) experienced a physical sensation, they got bendable legs. Ken now wears red trousers and a blue jacket with the initial K + the same beach sandals as in 1964. Allan wears the clothes in reverse colors: blue trousers and red jacket with the initial A. Ken has pack number # 1020 and Allan # 1010. Their wardrobe was expanded with 6 new outfits, and 4 earlier outfits were brought out slightly modified.
In diesem Jahr erlebten Ken und Allan (sowie Barbie und ihre Freundinnen) eine körperliche Sensation, sie bekamen knickbare Gummibeine (bendable Legs). Physically, nothing changed for Ken and Allan this year and their clothes in the 1020 and 1010 sales packs are also identical. But her closet was getting full. There were 10 new outfits and 12 Pak articles were repeated.

Ken with Crew Cut was sold until 1968, but in 1967 he got his last outfit: a Braniff pilot uniform that goes with the hostess costumes of Barbie. The uniform is made by Marx and was sold through Montgomery Ward.
